In March this year 3rd Braunstone Brownies were awarded a Red Nose Day grant of £1,000 towards their summer camp. The trip was enjoyed by over 20 girls and for many it was their first visit to the countryside.
A lot of the children who attend the 3rd Braunstone Brownies do not participate in extra-curricular activities and spend a lot of time either at home or hanging around outside with friends. 3rd Braunstone Brownies provides a safe, comfortable weekly environment for girls aged 7 to 10 to develop an understanding of themselves, their community and the larger world through crafts and games and a range of different activities.
The three-night camp in summer 2015 was a great success and the young people had the opportunity to take part in crafts, home skills, archery, circus skills and cooking over an open fire. They also experienced life on an organised campsite. A total of 22 Brownies benefitted from this funding. Without the grant some of the children would not have had a holiday at all over the summer.
Neil Golightly, treasurer at 3rd Braunstone Brownies, said: “This was a fantastic chance to take the girls on a holiday, without which they would never go away. Some of the girls have never been to the countryside.”
