The Melton Learning Hub has been able to provide a much-needed new home for its resident animals thanks to a £1,000 grant from Mars in the Community.
The Hub, in Burton Road, Melton Mowbray, offers qualifications in animal care, gardening and construction to students who struggle to benefit from mainstream education. More than 100 young people are taught at the Hub and all its students move into employment, education or training. Many progress onto training at Brooksby Melton College to complete qualifications in animal care, agriculture or construction.
The Mars grant was an ideal start to the 2015 teaching year for the students in construction, animal care and gardening. It allowed 36 students to take part in a practical activity that also directly benefited their education. The new shed provided a warmer and safer environment for the animals that are an integral part of the Hub’s courses.
Speaking after the completion of the project, Sarah Cox, from the Hub said: “The funding we received from Mars enabled us to give our students something creative and worthwhile to do in their first term at the Melton learning Hub.
“The funding allowed us to pull three groups of students to work together – construction, gardening and animal care. We have some really happy chickens now residing in ‘Cluckingham Palace’. Thank you for your support.”
Mars in the Community offers support to projects and groups working within three key themes: healthy active lifestyles, environment and pet welfare. Groups based within a 10 mile radius of the Mars UK site in Melton and a 15 mile radius of Waltham can apply for grants of up to £2,000.
