PROSTaid is a prostate cancer charity that funds prostate cancer specialist nurses in Urology at the point of diagnosis, in Oncology and Palliative care, and also runs support groups in Leicestershire where local men who have themselves been successfully treated give support and ‘befriending’. The charity furthermore funds cutting age treatment and diagnostic equipment and invests in prostate cancer research to benefit local men.
With a grant of £1,481 from Efficient Charitable Portfolio, cancer charity PROSTaid was able to set up a prostate cancer support group in Rutland, in response to demand they had identified by running awareness events in the area.
Meeting every month in the Lounge above Don Paddy’s restaurant in Uppingham, the group helps men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their partners by providing information, and the chance to talk to other men who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer.
So far 21 men are benefiting from the group, with more expected from a recent marketing exercise. One user commented: “we didn’t realise that there was an organisation like Prostaid – that independent of the NHS helped men and their partners on their treatment journey, with information & people who had themselves been treated for prostate cancer.”
