With funding of £2,425 from the Leicestershire Fund, Drum and Brass was able to stage a summer music week for young people who were given the chance to play modern and traditional music in a full orchestra, bands and ensembles. They were also able to sing in a choir and take part in creative activities including a jazz improvisation workshop and creating a stage backdrop with a graffitti artist.
The week ended with a concert for family and friends. As a result of the tuition during the week, the players were able to perform to a high level at the concert. Furthermore, some of them have gained the confidence to take a more active part in musical activities, e.g. school bands or local music groups, after the end of the course. In addition, volunteer music coaches and young mentors gained valuable experience which will actively increase their employability skills.
A range of young people benefited from the event, including some from low income families, the migrant population, and others with learning difficulties. The event, which was held at and in partnership with Gorse Hill City Farm brought parents and the local community together, as well as allowing the young people to form new friendships and grow in initiative and confidence.
Drum and Brass C.I.C. is a community interest company whose directors have shared aims to encourage music-making which reflects Leicester’s unique urban identity and cultural diversity. Current activities include a weekly open-access band at Woodgate Resources Centre, an Arts Award project with young offenders in Glen Parva and development of Early Years sensory sessions with Gorse Hill City Farm.
