With funding of £1,400 from CAP Fund, Warriors Basketball Club was able to provide kit and equipment to benefit more than 65 young people in some of Leicester’s most disadvantaged areas. In addition to purchasing T-shirts and hoodies, balls, bibs and cones, the grant awarded allowed a 19 year-old member to progress from volunteering for the Club to a Basketball Level 1 Coaching qualification.
Not only has the individual gained confidence with the support and guidance of the Warriors’ coaching staff, but the other team members have seen one of their peers giving back to the Club and ultimately achieving a qualification while making that contribution.
Warriors supports young people who have become involved in crime, substance misuse, who have experienced bullying, or who have an unstable or troubled family upbringing through weekly and weekend sessions, holiday programmes and competitive teams for boys, girls and adults. It also offers guidance to parents who are new to the city and are looking to get their children involved with positive activities.
Warriors Basketball Club is a BME-run basketball club which is based in the Highfields area of Leicester, and offers basketball to boys and girls aged 6 to 19 within the city and throughout the county. Adult sessions are also offered. The club is inclusive, focusing on the provision of basketball coaching to different communities.
Warriors also offers courses for young people who are interested in becoming a coach or a volunteer, and runs a mentoring programme for those interested in coaching. One of few BME-run basketball clubs in the country, Warriors is now 25 years old.
