Shepshed Amateur Boxing Club provides training facilities and professional coaching for men and women of all ages above 13. Activities are bespoke depending on personal needs, and range from socialising with other lovers of boxing to low-level exercises; assistance with weight loss and fitness; coping with bullying; high level circuit training and boxing coaching from beginners to competition level. The club is run by accomplished and titled boxers with an excellent reputation for their volunteering and dedication to working with children and young people.
With funding of £1,000 from the William Colton Youth Sport Fund, Shepshed Amateur Boxing Club was able to provide equipment and coaching training to enable it to continue its work with a range of people including those who are unemployed or on low income, suffering from mental ill health, disabled, struggling at school or college or at risk of offending.
Through partnership working with the local police, schools and key community members in identifying children and young people at risk of exclusion and offending, the club is able to offer added value. In addition, ex-offenders are placed with them to help them avoid re-offending.
In addition to boxing skills up to competition level, the outcomes for club members include improved health and wellbeing across all age groups, improved anger management, increased confidence and self-esteem and a reduction in crime and repeat offending.
