Make A Difference Day is a worldwide celebration of people’s power to make a difference (for more information see here – http://www.csv.org.uk/volunteering/ways-make-difference-2014)
On the fourth Saturday in October, millions of volunteers around the world will unite to mark Make a Different Day by improving the lives of others.
Join in and make a difference locally!
Voluntary Action Leicester (VAL) are marking Make a Difference Day by giving people the opportunity to get involved with small actions that have big impacts.
Whether you have ten minutes or two hours, pop in to VAL and take part in a range of activities including:
- Writing a letter to a sick child
- Making Christmas decorations for a local care home
- Finding out about campaigns that Oxfam and Amnesty Internal are running and how you can add your voice
- Knitting squares for blankets for children in Afghanistan (a free knitting workshop will be provided)
You don’t need to book an appointment to take part. Simply drop by to the VAL offices on 9 Newarke Street, Leicester LE1 5SN on 24 October between 10am and 4pm.
Children are more than welcome.

Get Set Heritage
Various times and locations
Young people in Get Set will be going to various locations across the county to report on and take photos of the different volunteering activities. They will be allocated to the activities in this table once complete.

Young people aged 16-25 will have the opportunity to work at County Hall (all departments), Harborough Museum, Work clubs and in libraries.
Century Theatre
Friday 24 October, Century Theatre, Snibston
Volunteers will plan, develop and deliver family cinema night in Britain’s oldest surviving travelling theatre.
Country Parks
Saturday 25 October, 10am-3pm, Donisthorpe Woodland Park Country Parks
New volunteers will have the opportunity to try out coppicing.
Youth offending service (YOS)
Monday 27 October, 12pm-6pm, Asda Fosse Park
Four adult volunteers and two young people will be on a stall at ASDA, raising awareness and talking to the general public on the work of the YOS.
Heritage
Monday 27 October 10am -2pm Barrow Stores
Volunteers at Barrow stores can work on archaeological artefacts such as coins, pottery, small finds, metal work and treasure.
Volunteers will also be working with the costume collection. The fashion collections includes work by Ralph Lauren, Versace, Vivienne Westwood and Dior.
Love food, hate waste
Monday 27 October, 4pm, The Cove, Children’s Centre, Melton
One volunteer will be showing families how to use leftovers in their cooking class with a Halloween theme.
Heritage
Tuesday 28 October, Snibston
Colliery Guardians Volunteers will be working front of house conserving the large transport artefacts such as The Merry Weather Fire Engine and the Steam Engine.
Century of Stories
Wednesday 29 October, Melton Library
Volunteers will support History cafes where the public are able to discover their personal connection to WW1

Leicester Marathon: Volunteer marshalls are needed for the Leicester Marathon on October 26 2014 either in the City Centre or in the Syston, Rearsby, or East Goscote area.
Burbage Common conservation: Volunteers are needed to help with the conservation of Burbage Common on 2 November. Volunteers will work with the Green Space team carrying out practical tasks such as fence or path repairs, woodland management coppicing, hedge laying and pond clearance.
Evington Park: Leicester City Council is calling on people of all ages and from all walks of life to roll their sleeves up and get involved with maintenance, cleaning and improvement works on 29 October
Community Litter Picking: Improve your area with a community litter pick. All ages welcome, and equipment will be provided.
Fireworks Volunteers: Volunteers will be needed to help with marshalling, selling items, helping with parking and helping on the gate in Oadby or Coalville on 1 November.
Musical volunteers: Volunteers are needed to organise and help with musical activities at AigburthCare Home in Oadby.
Leicester Charity Link Food bank: Charity Link has been helping to run the City Centre food bank since it was set up a year ago. Since then the food bank has given out over 6,000 food parcels. The food bank needs volunteers to help out on Friday 24 October
