In May this year Abel Camp was awarded £2,000 through the Community Foundation from our John Salmon Fund.
Abel Camp run camping activities for physically disabled children and young people as well as those with learning difficulties. All of the young people who attend the camps are from Leicester and Leicestershire and Abel Camp provides an individual carer for each young person they take on holiday. The annual holiday takes place in Wales.
This year, Abel Camp used funding from the Community Foundation to purchase tents and equipment. Funding also covered transport costs, food and fun onsite activities.
The camp was a great success and everyone who attended had a thoroughly enjoyable time. A total of 55 young people benefitted from this funding.
Phil Cox, Fundraiser at Abel Camp said, ‘Without the funding we would unable to run the camp. It allows us to provide a wonderful weeks experience for disabled children and young people, who would normally be unable to have this experience.’
A young person who attended the camp this year said, ‘I have been a camper for many years, I enjoy this experience, and the help I receive on the camp is great. The camp not only gives me a break but it helps to give my parents a well-earned rest.’
Another young person said, ‘I love this camp!’
