Braunstone Adventure Playground is charity that provides facilities and services for recreation and leisure time activities for children and young people who live in the North and South Braunstone and Rowley Fields areas of Leicester. Their aim is to improve conditions of life for children by promoting their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Their main activity is the management of the Adventure Playground which also includes a sports area, paddling pool, games hall, dance, art and TV rooms. As well as day to day activities, the playground hosts a number of special events including play schemes, trips, parties and discos. The facilities are free to use, and encourage young people to interact and play in a safe and supervised environment.
With funding received from the Leicestershire Fund, Braunstone Adventure Playground was able to take ten children from single parent or low income families and two adults on a PGL camping trip to Shropshire in the summer of 2015. The children would otherwise have been unable to enjoy such an experience.
The children took part in numerous outdoor activities including canoeing, raft building, abseiling, high ropes and many more activities they would not normally have access to.
The camp has traditionally been run on an annual basis, but due to a lack of funding did not take place in the previous year. The children who had been waiting to be old enough to go were so disappointed that this year’s event was even more appreciated.
Participant Katie, aged 12 said: “It’s been brilliant, can I go again next year!”
