With a £1,000 grant from Sport’s Relief Community Cash, Together We Can was able to establish a specialised group for young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties. When they realised there was no appropriate provision for people in such situations, Together We Can decided to put together a group aimed at people with similar disabilities, which allowed them to connect with others, become involved in competitions, and help their parents and families develop a sense of belonging, and to feel less isolated.
The group was created and then quickly introduced to the Special Olympics in which some members will be competing later this year. Several other members will join them in Sheffield to cheer them on. Other activities the group offered with the grant included Hydro Therapy, Music Therapy, Multi-sensory Therapy and Motor Activity Training for those taking part in the Special Olympics.
The group has formed a strong community bond and by sharing information on special needs services, both within the private and public sectors they have all gained better awareness of the support available to their families. This sharing has also increased Together We Can’s knowledge of possible solutions to some of the problems their members face on a day today basis.
