Charitable Legacies

Leaving money to charity in your Will is achieved through a charitable legacy. This can be effected in a number of ways, to ensure that everyone can leave exactly what they want to the causes of their choice. You can leave a fixed sum, the entirety of your estate or the residue i.e. what is left after other gifts have been paid out, for example, to family and friends.

Many charities only survive due to the generosity of those who leave them money in their Will, so legacies can make a huge difference.

How it works

At Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation, we work locally with dozens of small, unbranded charities and groups – the ‘unsung’ heroes that quietly go about making our counties safer and healthier. This means we are uniquely placed to ensure your legacy goes to the specific causes or geographic areas of your choice.

We do this by setting up your own, personally named giving fund now, that your estate pays into later, according to instructions you leave in your Will and letter of wishes.

You may want your fund to benefit named local groups that are close to your heart, or prefer it to support charities that match certain criteria, e.g. to promote healthier lifestyles for young people, to help those suffering from a mental illness or to fund Leicestershire & Rutland animal welfare charities.

Through our outreach work and donor matching programme, we maintain an awareness of the local charitable landscape, what projects are going on and who needs help at any given time. In this way, we ensure your legacy is distributed according to your wishes as well as going where it is most needed.

Types of fund

We manage two types of fund: spend-down funds which are paid out then closed, or, endowment funds which enable you to leave a lasting legacy. Your donation will be invested to produce an ongoing income which we will distribute each quarter on your behalf. In this way, many essential local charities are able to survive and thrive, with a secure source of income for the future.
